I said goodbye to Frankie, kissing her face and telling her I would be back as quick as I could. It was broad daylight by the time I left for England.

I didn’t want to go. I hated leaving Frankie when it was so dangerous, but I needed to speak to Saxon. I might find out something that would help. And Karl was still in England. I had time.

I took one last look at Rue Morte and headed off for England in the van.

Chapter Fifteen

Frankie

It was the next evening when I woke to find everyone gone. I had overslept because of the previous day.

Gilot had asked Nik and Ry to check some location out for the Elders. They suspected some pureblood vampires had set up a temporary home there and were looking for the Elders.

Flynn would be with Saxon now, so that only left Dray and me at home.

I stretched and got out of my coffin. I always overslept in here; it was so cosy. A quick shower and some breakfast of warm cow blood later, and I was ready to go and see Dray. I hoped he felt better today and that Flynn’s blood had helped.

‘Dray,’ I shouted as I knocked on his door.

He didn’t answer, and my senses pricked up. I listened closely at the door, but it was silent inside. Was he dead? I could hear no heartbeat.

Acidic panic rose up in my throat, but I pushed it back—a quick sniff told me the room was empty. But I opened the door to confirm my thoughts—it was empty.

Maybe he was feeling better; he might be in the kitchen. He hadn’t eaten for days.

I hurried off to the kitchen, but he wasn’t there. Next, I went to see Gilot.

‘Have you seen Dray?’ I asked.

‘No, joile femme. Not this evening.’

I hurried out of the kitchens, alarm bells ringing. Dray never went anywhere without telling me. Had Lucy taken him again?

Calm down, Frankie. Think.

Dray was weak; he could not go very far on his own.

I sniffed the air. My sense of smell was my most reliable sense and probably my best. I picked up almost all of the vampires' individual aromas that lived here, but Lucy’s was not one of them. She hadn’t been back. Wherever Dray was, he had gone there on his own.

I took out the telephone apparatus that Flynn had given me—for emergencies. I stared at the phone like he had shown me, and the screen burst into colour. It was a picture of the neon Blackheart sign that I so loved, and a pang of guilt stabbed through my chest. It was because of me Flynn’s club had been destroyed.

I pushed the feeling away and concentrated on the phone. Now, what had Flynn told me to do? Ah yes, press the button and speak.

‘Call Ry,’ I said in a clear voice.

The lady in the phone replied.

‘Calling Ry. Brr brr. Brr brr.’

‘Frankie?’ Ry’s voice questioned through the device.

‘Is Dray with you?’

‘No. Just Nik and me. Why? Is everything okay?’

‘I can’t find him.
